This Swamp Rat Ratweiler came pretty beaten up as you can see. I removed the handles and stripped it. I then gave it a nice satin finish and a crazy sharp convex edge. I left the coating underneath the handles for protection. Nothing like a beater turning into a like new knife.

I havent had much time to grind lately but I was able to finish a couple of knife mods this week and here is one of them. This is a Swamp Rat Waki that came to me with a black coating on it. The owner wanted me to give it a satin finish with a zero convex edge. They also wanted me to shorten the length of the handle so it wasn’t so long. I think it turned out pretty sweet. What do you guys think?

The Busse Cultellus was a salmon roe knife for a few years and therefore has a slight pinkish tint to the micarta handles. I cleaned it up pretty good and it is super sharp. It comes with a tan kydex sheath from an unknown sheathmaker.
The Busse Fat Gamewarden is new and sports a zero convex edge. This fatty can cut. It comes with an OD Kydex sheath from Steelnut.

This Busse Active Duty is unique because it has a Gamewarden handle on it. It to me with a white coating on it. The owner wanted me to give it a full satin finish with convex edge and also wanted me to remove the talon hole and enlarge the choil so you can choke up on it. The last request for this knife was to skeletonize the tang so it would be lighter. I documented that in this post –> http://knifemods.wordpress.com/2011/05/18/skeletonized-tang/ .

Here is a thorough pictorial of a Swamp Rat Ratmandu knife modification. I like taking pictures in natural light and all of these pictures are all varying degrees of that to help show the satin finish and polished convexed edge. SR101 is an awesome steel that gets crazy sharp. I have included a short video of the RMD slicing some newspaper. I cut the video short because the wind kicked up but you get the idea.

This Swamp Rat Ratmandu and Swamp Warden came with a black crinkle coat on them. I gave the RMD a satin finish with convex edge and black torx bolts. The Swamp Warden received a satin finish and a convex edge. I also radiused the spine all the way around to the choil. It feels much better in hand this way and you can use it for longer periods of time without your hand fatiguing.

I found this video from a couple years ago of me clearing a privet hedge with a convexed Busse FFBM. The mass of the FFBM makes it cleanly cut 2.5″ wood like it is nothing. I miss my FFBM and to make up for it I have a 1/4″ thick 18″ chopper in the works.

After breaking a couple of expensive carbide drill bits I had enough of drilling hardened steel and decided to head down to my friends waterjet shop. My buddies over at Rustworks were able to help me out and make short work of skeletonizing the tang on a couple knives for a customer. If you are ever in need of a waterjet or metal fabrication service and live anywhere from Carmel to Napa (Central CA) don’t hesitate to contact Jeremy or Jesse over at Rustworks. They do some absolutely amazing work with all types of materials and are 2 of the nicest guys I know. With a client list that includes Apple, NASA, Cisco, Google and Tesla you can be assured that they know what they are doing.
A water jet is an impressive machine that is hard to believe until you see it. Witnessing a stream of water and grit cut steel and rock is amazing. Operating at 60,000 psi it can cut up to 4″ of steel and 6″ of stone. I took a video and some pictures to show you the process.
